Markup App For iPad

Jun
3

Now that the UK iPad’s have finally been launched it is time to start looking at some or the new apps that are available. As I have an interest in web design / development I have been looking forward to being able to do some of my work on an iPad instead of using a desktop computer all the time. In my next two posts I am going to be looking at two web development tools. Before I begin I think it is only fair to say that I am a big fan and regular user of Coda from Panic on my Mac so I am really wishing for an iPad version of Coda, so my opinions are based on that wish as I try out these other two apps. For those of you not familiar with Coda it is an all in one development application that  has six main areas two of these (terminal and books) I can do without so that leaves site management and ftp, code editor, preview without switching to a separate browser, and finally a css editor would be nice.

The first app is called Markup the developer is also working on a site at markupapp.com. The app costs £5.99 GBP.

This app has some of the ftp features of coda in that it has thumbnails for sites but it lacks in the editor area as it does not yet feature syntax colour coding or code suggestions.  A handy menu at the top when in the editor enables fast access to the < and </ etc and the editor also auto closes tags for you. Once you have made your additions or changes a single touch uploads the file and another allows you to preview the file on the web. A third touch allows you to switch back to editor mode, so work flow can be quite quick when working on a single file and testing changes. The file manager / ftp section allows the creation of new files and folders and has the facility to upload images from the iPad photo application.

Overall I feel the application is a useful tool to have particularly with multiple sites configured for fast access, when you need to make a quick alteration to a site, but I don’t feel that the editor is feature rich enough to take on coding sites from scratch.

Apple iPads Arrive A Day Early In The UK

May
27

Many UK iPad customers who pre-ordered from the 10th May onwards are starting to receive their long waited for iPads a day earlier than expected. Many have been tracking their iPads as they made the way through the carriers networks (UPS and TNT) from Foxconn in China. Many forums have been full of comments second guessing when iPads might arrive, and passing on information from the many phone calls made to Apple and the courier companies. Now they are going quiet apart from the short messages announcing arrival, as new iPad owners finally get their hands on the long awaited device.

MobileMe Will Work With iPad.

Apr
15

In a previous post I questioned whether or not the iPad would work with MobileMe. As suspected it will and  Apple now have a page all about iPad and MobileMe functionality. The page shows that as well as syncing mail, contacts, and calendar the iPad will also support remote wipe and find my iPad features previously available for the iPhone.

UK iPad Release Delayed Again

Apr
14

The Apple web site for the UK has today changed to show the iPad shipping late May, it previously claimed late April and before that late March. Today’s change also says that Pre-orders will begin on 10th May so I suspect that Apple may actually stick to the date of late May this time. I hope that as Apple continues to grow this is not the first signs of them turning into a more ‘Microsoft’ like company. There is still no details of the UK iPad pricing.

iBooks App Now Available.

Apr
2

The Apple iBooks App is now available for free download from the App Store in the USA. The App is for the iPad only which is a shame for a iPhone users using existing ebook reader apps like Stanza as they will have to swap between two apps if they own and wish to read on both devices. The good news is that the app will support the importing of DRM-Free ePub format documents through iTunes version 9.1.

iPod Camera Connector with iPad

Mar
25

I have been wondering if the old iPod Camera Connector (M9861G/A) will work with the new iPad from Apple. It appears to be physically the same as the one shown as part of a set of two accessories for the iPad (iPad Camera Connection Kit) iPad Camera Connection KitThe new iPad Camera Connection Kit contains two adapters both have a 30 pin dock connector on one end and then they have either a usb port for connection of a digital camera or a SD card slot for putting the cameras sd memory card in. Both will allow the transfer of digital photos onto the iPad. The old iPod Camera Connector is the same as the one with the USB port connectivity.

iPod camera connectorI can not see any reason why you would need both parts of the set, and would suspect that most users will favour one method or the other. If this is the case and the iPod camera connector is also the same internally as the new iPad camera connector then for many including me this will be one accessory that will not require a further purchase.
